Chelsea Scoring Goals and won an important victory in the first leg of the 2020/2021 Champions League Round of 16, Wednesday (24/2/2021) early morning WIB over Atletico Madrid. Olivier Giroud’s overhead kick in the 68th minute, ensured the Blue won 1-0 at the Los Rojiblancos ‘headquarters’ who were transferred to Arena Nationala, Romania.

First round

The match tried to be controlled by Chelsea from the first minute. However, an error was made by Edouard Mendy when he received a backpass. The ball can be grabbed by Saul Niguez but the speed is too fast so that it cannot be used to become a goal.

The first chance then got Chelsea through Andreas Christensen’s speculative experiment in the 12th minute, but the ball flew away from the target. Three minutes later, it was Thomas Lemar’s turn to go wide of the target.

Marcos Alonso tried to peek at the opportunity by firing a diagonal shot horizontally in the 25th minute, but Jan Oblak still easily secured it. The visitors again threatened on 39 minutes through Timo Werner’s effort. However, Jan Oblak was again swift to secure the net.

Atletico Madrid is not without opportunities. Luis Suarez had the option to trouble the Chelsea goal, but stumbled when he was about to execute the ball. As a result, the first half ended without any goals being scored.

Second round

Chelsea launched the pressure again after halftime. Mason Mount had a chance in the 50th minute, but his shot was blocked by Mario Hermoso. The same thing happened to Luis Suarez’s kick which Andreas Christensen blocked in the 56th minute.

Joao Felix had an acrobatic shot in the 58th minute but the ball flew far from the goal of Edouard Mendy. Chelsea were finally able to break into the Atletico Madrid goal in the 68th minute through Olivier Giroud’s overhead kick. The goal was checked for offside reasons.

However, referee Felix Brych approved the goal after receiving a whisper from VAR. In the replay, Mario Hermoso kicked the ball before being struck by Olivier Giroud in the air. These goals forced Atletico Madrid to play more openly.

Atletico Madrid failed to take advantage of six minutes to score a goal. As a result, Chelsea won 1-0 at the National Stadium, Bucharest, Romania. The second leg will be held in London on March 18, 2021 WIB.
