OPTICXCESS — Facebook Paid $ 650 million in Indemnity on User Claims
Facebook had to spend USD 650 million. The money was paid due to the settlement of a class action lawsuit by a number of users on Facebook.
The lawsuit alleges Facebook violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, which collects and stores digital scans of users’ faces without notice or consent.

As for Facebook users who filed the lawsuit, around 1.6 million people, with each getting USD 345.
“By any measure, the settlement of USD 650 million in this biometric privacy class lawsuit is an extraordinary outcome,” wrote US District Court Judge James Donato of the Northern District of California, quoted from Variety, Sunday (28/2/2021).
“Overall, this settlement is a huge win for consumers in the hotly contested area of digital privacy,” he continued.
In a statement, a Facebook representative said the company was pleased to have reached a settlement so that they could address this issue which is in the best interest of both users and shareholders.
This court process has been going on for a long time since 2015. Facebook had agreed to a USD 550 million settlement in January 2020, then agreed to increase it to USD 650 million by order of a judge.
